What is your upgrade policy*?

A liberal upgrade policy is available on most products. The upgrade discounts depend on the course, publisher, availability and when you purchased the course.

For example when a IT technical certification test changes and when our publisher produces an upgrade for the certification program, they will  offer our  customers free upgrades on the equivalent videos and/or interactive CD-ROM's for up to 1 year on the equivalent updated course. The customer may have to return their old training CD-ROMs and then receive the new ones absolutely free (shipping and handling costs apply). What if I want to keep my old courses, but still need to get the upgraded version?

A. The exams are administered through Thomson Prometric and Pearsons VUE testing centres.

How long will it take me to complete a self-study course?

How long it will take to be ready to pass the exam depends on how much time you are able to study per day and your prior knowledge level.

Most of our IT Certification courses are designed to be the equivalent of attending a 25-60 hour classroom seminar, but we no way of knowing how long it will take each student or how much effort the student will put into a course. The course duration listed in the course outlines are average guides only.

Unless there is an expiry date for the exams the courses can be studied in your own time, anywhere at your own pace.

Do I need prior networking experience to prepare for the MCSE exams?

A. Microsoft is making it tougher to certify by making their exams more performance based. Microsoft is stressing the need for real-world experience. While not a requirement, MCSE requirements state that "The Windows 2000 and 2003 track of the MCSE credential is designed for IT professionals working in the typically complex computing environment of medium to large organizations. 

An MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system or at least have at least completed the CompTIA Network+ course.

In addition, an MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience in the following areas:

  • Implementing and administering a desktop operating system.
  • Implementing and administering a network operating system.
  • Designing a network infrastructure.

What they are saying is that realistically you could not be a real MCSE unless you have served an apprenticeship (and rightly so). There is no shortcut and employers know this and are now not prepared to take the risk when there are experienced MCSE's to choose from. Not what people want to hear but true!

For the people without the above experience we recommend that they consider doing a prerequisite course such as Network+ and/or the MCSA certification course with A+ and Network+ as the electives.

The MCSA credential is designed for IT professionals who implement, manage, and troubleshoot network systems based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows .NET Server platforms. Implementation responsibilities include managing and supporting the network systems.

Typical System requirements

A: Pentium III,. CD-ROM, 128+ MB RAM, Sound Card, Available Hard Disk Space 5 MB, Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, XP.

For online course you need a multimedia enabled computer and an Internet connection to display movies and run interactive simulations. Furthermore, a broadband connection such as a T1 or cable/dsl home connection is recommended, as the multimedia portions of the site may be prohibitively slow over a dial-up connection.

Why e-books study guides?

A Electronic books often in Acrobat PDF format are becoming increasingly more popular for IT study guides, especially with those who are constantly on the go and need to find a way to travel light. But can you really get used to reading books on a computer screen?

Although I wouldn't want to sit at my desktop or Notebook to read a novel, it works great for computer training, reference and troubleshooting books. Turning pages is as simple as clicking a button.

The search capabilities make it simple to find references based on keywords, to an extent that even the best back-of-book index can't rival. How to create the most effective training experience for your staff?

Psychiatrists have been telling us for years that a patient has to want help before help can be provided.

The same axiom holds true in the training world.

You must provide your trainees with the right training framework

And what is the right training framework?

1     You must know what the problem is, and what the solution will be.

This one sounds too simple to be true. But you'd be amazed to see how often this factor is overlooked. If you don't know what's wrong, you won't know how to solve it.

2     They must want to be trained.

If it's going to help them increase their skills convince them of how wonderful this will be.

Promote the course. If it's going to increase their capacity to earn more tell them. Point out how the training is relevant to current and/or future job needs, and that learning these new skills make employees more valuable to the company.

Remember negative expectations from trainees will pollute even the most well designed training.

3     Create the right training environment

Obtain a commitment from the trainee and a deadline for completing it

Schedule a time for doing the training. Having a separate area helps to point out to the trainees that management considers the training to be an important part of their work. Being away from the interruptions of their regular job helps the trainees to focus on training. If a separate area is not feasible the trainee should be allocated time concentrate on training at their regular work area and be relieved of normal work during this period.

Involve management and if possible encourage the trainee to work with a mentor.

Be flexible. It may be more effective to spread the training over several sessions or an hour or two per day. Give trainee time to practice after each training session

4.     Finally, measure and monitor your trainee.

You want to measure before and after the training to gauge effectiveness.

You may have successfully taken care of #1, #2, and #3 above, but what happens a week, a month, or a year after the training ends? Who will ensure that its legacy lives beyond the actual training experience?

You must elect someone capable of this ownership task, and empower her/him to do what is necessary to ensure that post-training gains are achieved over the long-term.

Implementing the four steps noted above will firmly put you on the right track, and head you in the right long-term direction.
